How to Shop Taobao for bjd clothes

Our resident Taobao ‘expert’ Issy Fawcett, was always being asked how she shopped Taobao. Some of the ‘hauls’ she was posting to us, left us all in envy of her shopping savvy.  She has graciously given her permission to post her instructions on ResinMuse.  Issy is one of our helpful admins on Recast BJD Haven, a facebook group for recast.

I’ve got many pages bookmarked for a future shopping spree (or 3).  I’m sure others will appreciate some guidelines on searching and ordering for our ball jointed dolls (bjd).

But first, what is Taobao? It’s likened somewhat to a Chinese Ebay. You can find some things much cheaper, even with paying an agent and the shipping, than you would otherwise find in the states or other areas.

OK so I know a few of you were having trouble so yeah, this should clear it up. Let me know if there’s anything you don’t understand and I’ll add it here. I only buy clothing and eyes from Taobao and in my experience it’s around 1/3 of the price of company/ebay stuff.

Using an Agent:

 I buy from Taobaotrends, they speak perfect English and are quick and reliable. You don’t have to use this one, your choice but in my experience, they’re great AND the agent fee is pretty low. The website is OK so how it works is below:

[If you want a visual tutorial, see Ordering from Taobao on Recast BJD Haven]

1. Sign up.

2. Click the “submit your orders” tab on the left side.

Here you copy and paste the URLs of the items you want to buy.

3. So go on Taobao (Google Translate the webpage). and find things you want (I’ll make a list of things to search further down). Paste them into the bar, click submit. If there’s options on the buying page (1/4, 1/3, whatever) then put that in the descriptions box on Tbtrends. If not, just leave it. Keep doing that until you have everything you want.

4. When you’re done go to “My shopping cart” and click “check out”. Type in your shipping address. You’re done.

They will then check your order to make sure it’s all in stock (and let you know if it’s not. you can either swap it for other items you want or just leave it. If you leave it the price will be deducted from your shipping.)

After this you’d pay and they’d order it for you. When it arrives at their warehouse they send you a photo of your order (that part is very exciting) and then you pay for the shipping to you. I would wholeheartedly recommend EMS. 3-5 days instead of 3 weeks+ with HK post.

So it’s easy right? ^___^

Jessica and Colin (tbtrends owners) will update you on each step with your order: processing, checking, ready for payment, ordered, arrived at tbtrends, etc, etc. and have amazing communication.

Terms to search on taobao:

Start every search with “BJD”, NOT ABJD, your search won’t come up with much for ABJD.

女 = Girl

男 = Boy

大叔 = 70cm+ (translates to “Uncle” for some reason hahaha.)

3分 = 1/3 SD

4分 = 1/4 MSD

6分 = 1/6 Yo-SD

(you can also just type BJD 1/4, etc)

鞋 = Shoes

假发 = Wig

高温 bjd = Heat resistant wigs

穿着 = Dress

套装 = I think this means outfit or fullset.

玻璃眼 = Eyes (seems to be all glass)

亚克力眼睛 = Eyes (seems to be all acrylic)

外套 = Coat

復古 – Means “vintage” or “retro”

洛丽塔 – Lolita. (A lot of the time you can just put ‘lolita’)

林女 – Mori style

淑女 – Girly/Feminine

可愛- cute

现货 = Means ‘in stock’.

Converting Prices

Prices on Taobao seem too high and you’re wondering what all the fuss is about?  When the page translates to English, the price doesn’t automatically convert.  It still shows up in Chinese Yuan Renminbi. And You have to convert it.

To get an accurate conversion rate from Yuan to USD or GBP or whatever else go to PayPal. You’ll get exactly the amount you are spending as tbtrends use PayPal. Go to the “send money” part and use the currency converter there.

[ I use this link, but change the 688 to whatever price is listed on the taobao page – ]

If you have anymore questions or need help searching just ask, I’m happy to help (Issy Fawcett). :)

Hello! I was trying to follow the advice of the information here on shopping for BJD clothes. I went to the Taobao site and now I have a few questions. The prices did not look any cheaper to buy on that site then anywhere else. I saw shoes that were saying like $68.00, does that really mean $6.80 a pair or something? Or maybe if there were 5 different styles you could get all 5 for $68 USD? Sorry, I am very new to this and was just wondering as I have seen outfits I have wanted to buy on Alice’s Collections, but saw them for even more costs on Taobao!! Thank you for any help and information. Tracy

If you read the bottom of the article, it has a note about the conversion rate and how to convert it to your currency. I’ll edit it and make it a bit more prominent. In any case, the prices are in Chinese Yuan Renminbi and do not convert when the page converts to English. If something is priced at 68.00 on TB it converts to about 11 USD. Big difference.

Hope this helps!

Hello again and Thank You for answering me. I’ll try that again so I can see better prices. That is quite a difference! Thanks again! Tracy

Is there any way I can know where I can actually buy from, though?
I tried to make an order today, but it was cancelled because the store I wanted to buy from wouldn’t sell to taobao agents. Which was kind of WTF to me, since I thought the whole POINT of a taobao agent was the whole, y’know, buying from a site that doesn’t sell to the US, and then sending it state side for you. :/

It was really disappointing, and I haven’t wanted to try an order since, since I feel like almost everything will be rejected. I really don’t think this can work out for non chinese speakers. :/

Sunny’s World and Nine9Style will not sell to known agents. Otherwise, most everything else is fine.

Many, many people, English speaking, order from Taobao often… it might be frustrating at first, but really, it’s a great option.

If you’re having troubles, and want a bit more info/guide – check this article on Recast BJD Haven – Ordering from Taobao – bjdpifa example

Hi! I know I’m like a year late already, but I had some questions and I felt you guys would be the best to ask!

I want to find clothes for my not-so commonly sized dolls: their bodies are the 65cm Impldoll Star body and the 20cm doll leaves body. Their measurements are quite unique (like the Star body is too muscular to fit even the largest size) so none of the pre-made clothes in taobao fit them :( I was wondering if you guys could recommend shops who make custom clothing or show me how to search for shops which offer custom clothing.
